During the first couple of weeks in Kāhu Rua we have explored a number of art making techniques to brighten up our learning community and get to know more about each other. First we completed birthday balloons where you chose a balloon with your birthday month on it, then used your creativity to make it stand out with your birthdate and name. Marc, you drew patterns, pictures and designs that appealed to you. Once you were finished we hung them all together so we can acknowledge everyone’s birthday throughout the year. Another activity we did was creating our own self portrait. Together your whānau class followed specific instructions so our portraits looked similar, but when it came time to colour it, that was your opportunity to make your portrait look like you. Some children added patterns to their t-shirts, ensured their hair and eye colour looked like them and others added accessories they wear every day, such as earrings or glasses. Marc, you really took your time with this activity, ensuring your drawing and colouring skills were accurate. I loved seeing how you thought of others and helped your classmates find specific pastel colours they needed, for example a good colour for different skin tone. Our classroom is becoming a much more inviting space to be in and really shows off the identity of the children who work in Kāhu Rua every day.
