Recently, Whaea Maddy’s friend Lucy, brought in her dog Elton so you could create a piece of writing from the perspective of an animal, and imagine you were a dog visiting our classroom. You were very excited when they arrived as you had seen Elton in some of the videos Whaea Maddy made during lockdown. Elton was a cross between a Chihuahua and a Japanese Spitz. When Elton was let off his lead he enjoyed making his way around everyone in the class, lying on his tummy when you and your peers began to pat him. It was lovely to be able to pat him as both he and you felt comfortable in each other’s presence. Marc, you had the opportunity to ask Lucy questions and found out that he was 2 years old and had been born on a farm, so was very good at rounding up animals. Lucy also said he always has lots of energy. Marc, you loved watching Elton perform some tricks, such as sitting on command, rolling over and fist pumping Lucy. Once our special visitors had left you brainstormed the things Elton may have seen, heard and felt while he was in the class. This helped you to imagine what it would be like being a dog visiting a large classroom full of children. Finally, you began writing about your adventure at Te Ao Mārama School from Elton’s perspective. Although you have just started this writing task I am looking forward to reading your finished piece at the end of the term. Marc, it was wonderful to see you being curious, respectful, engaged and interested during Elton’s visit, which allowed you to think of many ideas to include in your writing.
